The income tax department today raided wholesale onion dealers across the country in view of sudden spurt in its prices. Official sources said the raids have been conducted at Kolkata, Lucknow, Varanasi, Kanpur, Ghaziabad, Bareilly, Meerut, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Amritsar, Chandigarh, Faridabad, Jammu and Surat.
The raids came after reports that onion were being sold at exorbitant prices and tax was evaded by the dealers to make profits.
Quoting official sources, our jalandhar correspondent reports that the income tax department conducting raids at the offices, godowns and cold storages of leading commission agents and traders in Jalandhar, Ludhiana and some other districts also to check illegal hoarding of onions and other vegetables that has led to their price rise.
